Why Does Dave Stockton Like This Putter?

Dave Stockton is a bit of a blast from the past in terms of name recognition today, but the former PGA champion and Ryder Cup captain always has been regarded as one of the game's great putters. So Stockton has worked with TaylorMade-adidas Golf to develop the Rossa Corza Ghost, a mallet that's easy to aim and roll the ball down your intended line.

The Rossa Corza Ghost will be available at retail next month with a suggested retail price of $159. Two more Ghost models – a blade and a mid-mallet – also with white finish and black alignment lines, are scheduled to become available in July.

Why so white? TMaG consulted Dr. Steven A. Hitzeman, a professor at the Indiana School of Optometry, who says the Corza Ghost's white putterhead stands out "clearly’" against the putting surface because of the high contrast between white and green. This contrast makes aiming easier for the eye.

Coming Friday: Callaway X-24 Hot Irons

Callaway Golf Company continues its popular X-series irons with the new X-24 Hot Irons, which will be available at retail May 28th.

Callaway calls the X-24 Hot Irons "the longest, most accurate irons" in the history of X-Series Irons--a pretty bold statement given the performance of the X-22 irons.

Phil Mickelson, by the way, plays X-Series irons. Lefty won the 2010 Masters with X-Prototype irons.

The new X-24s feature a Stealth PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) Finish that reduces glare as well as Callaway's familiar VFT Face Technology. There's also a 360-degree undercut channel and a precise center of gravity to create a large and effective hitting area for golfers of all abilities. The result, according to Callaway, is maximum distance while maintaining the same accuracy, even on off-center hits.

The X-24 Hot Irons will be available at a suggested retail price of $699 (steel) and $899 (graphite).

Check out the X-24 Hot Irons.

Golf Trick Shots--Seeing Is Believing

Watch CBS News Videos Online

For us, the greatest trick shot is ... hitting the ball straight. After that, some of the next greatest are in these videos:

Back in 2007, the famous Nike commercial showed Tiger Woods bouncing a ball off his wedge and then hitting the ball in mid-air. Still amazing after all these years. (Check out bloopers from that commercial.)

In 2008, World Golf Trick Shot Champion, Geoff Swain, released this video that raised the bar a bit on Tiger's trick. Swain did this feat in flip-flops and in freezing conditions.

But the most impressive trickster is Dennis Walters. He became paralyzed from the waist down in a golf-cart accident when he was 24, and for the last 34 years he's been doing trick shots on tour. Included in his repertoire is hitting a ball that's on fire and hitting three balls at once.

Watch Walters hit with his long-distance "cell-phone club."

Bucking Trend, 3 Courses Open--With a Bang

According to the National Golf Foundation:

  • 3,955 new courses opened in 2000
  • 124 in 2005
  • 49 in 2009
  • 50-75 should open in 2010

And yet--and yet--here are three new courses guaranteed to get your golf-vacation juices flowing:

The Patriot Golf Club, debuts this month in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's dedicated to our armed forces, and one of the principles is Dan Rooney, a PGA golf professional and F-16 pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard. The lush, new layout traverses through lowland marsh, heavy woodlands, high prairie and dramatic limestone canyons.

The Old American Golf Club, near Dallas, Texas, has limited play this spring with a grand opening July 4th. It was inspired by the natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes of classic American courses built between 1911 and 1937.

Opened in April, the Corales Golf Club, at the 15,000-acre Punta Cana Resort in the Dominican Republic, is a Tom Fazio-designed gem set between rocky cliffs with six oceanfront holes.

The Bad News? Golfer Gets an Eagle

To a golfer, this news can only be bad when the golfer actually hits the eagle with a golf ball, which happened recently in Florida. The good news? The eagle is healing well, thank you.

Earlier this spring, a juvenile wild bald eagle's wing was broken by a golf ball at Indian River County's Sandridge Golf Course in Stuart, Florida. The bird crashed into a tree and was rescued by the county's animal-control officers.

The golfer, btw, declined to be identified because the golfer felt too bad about the accident. He or she can take solace, however, in the fact that the bird is healing well in a large cage that Treasure Coast Wildlife Center officials approach quietly to avoid alarming the bird, preventing it from re-injuring the wing.

Summer's Sizzle and Mountain Majesty

Here's the perfect antidote to what promises to be a sizzling summer for golf: The Canadian Rockies in the Alberta province. You'll find refreshing mountain air (with nary a trace of humidity), stunning mountain settings, abundant wildlife and superbly designed courses.

For a resort experience, here are three choices:

  1. Kananaskis Country Golf Course is in a self-contained resort village where 36 holes of Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed golf is framed by soaring mountains
  2. Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, a mountain-framed layout in a national park setting
  3. Fairmont Banff Springs, with 27 holes of golf in a valley surrounded by mountains
Also on the mountain menu are Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club, surrounded by the Three Sisters Mountains; Silvertip Golf Resort, at the foot of Mt. Lady Macdonald; and Canmore Golf & Curling Club, located at the base of Bow Valley.

A Case Can Be Made for Getting the Shaft

At a swing school, we had our driver shaft tested. What an eye-opener. This "regular" shaft tested out as a senior. Hmmm.

The replacement shaft is a new UST Mamiya Attas International Series. Wow, what a difference in feel and results! Sometimes with the old shaft we knew the swing was good and yet the ball sprayed. That wasn't on us but on the noodle-for-a-shaft. Its whippy nature depleted a dwindling storehouse of swing confidence.

With the UST Mamiya Attas International Series, we have confidence. We're not wondering if this regular shaft is indeed a regular; UST Mamiya prides itself about tight tolerances. We're also confident that it isn't the shaft that causes bad results. If we do our part with a good swing, ball flight is lower and with a more boring trajectory. More carry and roll add 10 to 20 yards to a drive.

How to Play Kaua'i--After Playing Golf

Adventuresome travelers who hire a rafting company to help them explore the sea caves and waterfalls along Kaua'i's incomparably beautiful Na Pali Coast can complete their day by indulging in a delicious meal. The St. Regis Princeville's Makana Terrace tickles palates with entrees such as Lemongrass Crusted Ahi and Poached Coconut Curry Onaga.

After playing 18, golfers may want to rejuvenate muscles and restore their golf Zen by luxuriating in the Grand Hyatt Kaua'i's Anara Spa. Among the numerous amenities in this 45,000-square-foot manifestation of hedonism are a steam room, sauna, whirlpools and a lap pool. And a Lomilomi massage in one of the eight indoor-outdoor massage rooms will relax golfers enough to add 10 yards to their tee shots.

After finishing a round, golfers seeking the perfect Hawaiian beach from which to try surfing, stand-up paddling or sailing will find their sandy nirvana at Kalapaki Bay, which garlands the Kaua'i Marriot Resort.

The "Bali Hai" Best in Golf

Jagged Mount Makana overlooks the turquoise crescent of Hanalei Bay, capturing tropical beauty so perfectly on the North Shore of Kaua'i that the area doubled as Bali Hai in the 1958 film South Pacific.

Yet the St. Regis Princeville improves upon nature. With 51 oceanfront suites among its 252 recently redesigned guest rooms--all close to Hawaii's highest-rated track, the Prince Course, and within a well-struck driver of the breathtaking Makai Golf Club--the St. Regis Princeville caters to golfers who demand the best.

The Grand Hyatt Kaua'i Resort & Spa is equally spectacular. This resort infuses its lush open-air walkways and courtyards with an unmatched casual elegance, and Poipu Bay Golf Course, home to the Grand Slam of Golf from 1994 through 2005, gleams only steps away.

The lighthouse overlooking gorgeous Kalapaki Bay stands atop the black-lava peninsula like an exclamation point, emphasizing Kauai Lagoon's 16th hole. Yet guests at the adjacent Kaua'i Marriot Resort, with its circular pool and stunning views, will do their own exclaiming.

Kaua'i Golf: How Do You Play in Paradise?

Robert Trent Jones Jr. says course architects "entice you into mistakes, to see things that aren't there, like a mirage in the desert." Yet the countless splendors that distract golfers who play Jones' Prince Golf Course, Makai Golf Club and Poipu Bay Golf Course on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i aren’t illusions.

Ocean vistas and forced carries over rain-forested chasms eliminate the need for design trickery. Since trade winds turn postcard-perfect holes into knee-knockers, Jones mostly lets nature defend his courses. The Prince, however, is Machiavellian in its defenses and is best attacked with a fusillade of golf balls.

Puakea Golf Course combines natural beauty and golfing challenges so sublimely that scores may plummet out of respect for such an outstanding course. Reverence for the game and its artistry resonates on nearly every hole of Jack Nicklaus' Kauai Lagoons. Even Tour players are unlikely to find a more stellar, more stunning closing three holes.

Discover Kaua'i golf.
