Golf Tips from the Golf Partners Club's Newsletters:

Hello:

GOLF TIPS: Equipment, Travel, Discounts and Deals

I have been a life long member of the PGA Partners Club. They have exciting news about the future of the Club! They are moving in a new direction after 12 great years as partners with the PGA TOUR. Effective January 1, 2010, the Club ceased its affiliation with the TOUR and began a new partnership with GOLF Magazine.

As a result, they are called Golf Partners Club. Going forward, all paid Club members will receive GOLF Magazine every month instead of PGA TOUR Partners every other month. Please visit their new site: Golf Partners Club

I will still be posting these newsletters on a timely basis, and if you would like to join the Golf Partners Club please click this link:

What the Heck is a Shwine Bag?

Good question. We didn't know and could only speculate, which led to silliness (it's a bag for carrying German pigs, right?). Then we followed the online bread crumbs to discover that the Club Glove Shwine Bag is perfectly named: It's a bag for toting golf shoes and wine.

Ah, life is good when you actually have a need for such a hybrid. The bag contains:

  • Slots for shoes. Remove the shoes and insert wine bottles for a post-round picnic, concert in the square or a barefoot stroll along the coast.
  • Shoehorn
  • Mesh pocket for socks
  • Bottle opener

We're Warming up to Winter Gloves

Winter gloves? We've been skeptics because many are, well, winter gloves—gloves good for a snowball fight and for scoring a lot of snowmen on the course. They keep you hands warm (sort of), but you have the feel of a lumberjack when you're holding a wedge.

Not so with the Etonic G>SOK Winter Glove. Grip and feel (typing with them now, actually) are good, although we'd prefer that the right pinkie finger nestle into the overlapping grip a bit more snugly. But no biggie. The palms are light leather with small dots for grip, and the backs are microfleece that hugs your hand. Frankly, that soft microfleece is perfect for wiping a runny nose on a cold day. Just sayin' ....

Lengthened cuffs are nice for warmth, and the gloves are tight, which you want—but not so tight as to limit circulation. This ideal fit is a factor not only when you swing but also when you mark your scorecard, dig into your pocket for a ball marker, fiddle with clip-on sunglasses, etc.

And for the trip home, you can wear the G>SOKs as driving gloves.

Same Shoe for On and Off the Course

Pardon us, partner, but we're compelled to contaminate our golf world a bit with a baseball metaphor. See, Ecco Shoes has hit a "walk off" home run with the new Golf Street Premier. Wear them for playing a round, and then walk off the course to play around in the real world—without changing shoes.

When we tried them, it was tundra time here in the Upper Midwest, which meant hitting on a golf dome mat. Two thumbs up! It's a smart-looking leather shoe that can "pass" on and off the course, a point not to be dismissed. In a restaurant, you don't want to be judged as a Roy McAvoy type ("Tin Cup") because you're obviously wearing golf shoes. With the Golf Street Premier, no worries. You can't wear them in a high-end eatery, but you'll be fine most other places.

The Golf Street Premier has comfort you'd expect from Ecco, and the 1/8-inch cleats (81 per shoe) provide a solid grip on mats—and black ice, for that matter. Probably the same grip on grass, although wet grass would be questionable.

Still, the Golf Street Premier's an excellent choice for traveling light on buddy trips.

C'mon, a Tee Is Just a Tee. Nope!

That's what GolfTest USA thought, that the lowly tee was just a tee. So the group never bothered to test tees—until they understood that there are dozens of tee manufacturers making big claims.

Recently, GolfTest USA came up with the Comprehensive Golf Tee Test, which 60 testers used to judge performance, appearance, ease of use, durability and eco-friendly composition. The winner: Evolve Golf's Epoch performance tee.

Epoch's radius posts span the width of a golf ball dimple. This means, according to Evolve Golf, that the Epoch has the least friction of any tee, eliminating deflection at impact and increasing ball speed and control. The company says independent robotic tests combined with player testing show that the Epoch can improve distance up to 12 yards and accuracy up to 9. That's probably why the tee has been a part of 46 PGA Tour wins.

BTW, if you're confused about how high to tee your drives, Evolve Golf has the Sweet Spot System. At this Web site, enter your driver; the application gives you the depth-of-insertion mark (one of four) for when placing the tee into the ground.

Link your swing speed to distance improvement using Epoch.

Tee Time Weather Info for 16,000 Courses

"Weather" you play or not? It's always the big question with golf, isn't it? And if you do, what will be the conditions—not broadly for a general area but for the specific course you intend to play?

The answer is the Bushnell Golf FXi. It gives seven-day forecasts (using wireless Internet-driven data) for more than 16,000 U.S. courses. The unit requires no sensors, subscriptions or wires, and course conditions are updated 24/7.

You can: • Store and view your five favorite courses • Access morning, afternoon and evening forecasts for today and the next three days. • Plan for wind speed and direction—and for lightning • Decide to carry the umbrella or not based on the chance of rain prediction • Use the UV index to remind you about sunscreen • Dress according to the RealFeel feature, which factors in sun and wind to tell you what temperature the playing conditions will feel like

The Golf FXi also has an alarm with snooze, so that you can take this on your next buddy trip.

See demo of the Golf FXi.

Winter Golf: Do the Dominican Republic

Congratulations! You've taken the huge holiday hit and you're still standing. Now, before winter whacks you into the poster person for SAD, plan your winter golf getaway. Seek the sun, of course, and if you really want a "wow" from this trip, do the Dominican Republic.

Boasting two of the largest golf resorts in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic (DR) is becoming a major golf-vacation player. Last year, the International Association of Golf Travel Operators named the DR the Golf Destination of the Year for the Caribbean and Latin America.

The venerable Casa de Campo Resort near La Romana has three magnificent courses designed by Pete Dye: the Teeth of the Dog, The Links and — sporting perhaps the best name for a golf course — the Dye Fore.

Cap Cana is a $2 billion, 8,600-acre resort encompassing luxury hotels, a marina, residential villages, three miles of beach and three championship golf courses (with plans for three additional courses). The resort hosts the Cap Cana Championship, a Champions Tour event.

Check out DR golf options.

Machrihanish, Scotland—Say It and Play It

Machrihanish—just saying the word puts you in the mood for Scottish golf! This quaint, uncommercialized village is on the western side of the remote Kintrye peninsula. It's the site of the David McLay Kidd-designed Machrihanish Dunes course, a phenomenal layout framed by the Atlantic Ocean.

Kidd, known internationally for his design of the new Castle Course at St. Andrews, Queenwood in England and Bandon Dunes in Oregon, has fashioned the world's next great oceanside course Machrihanish Dunes. It's the first 18-hole links course built on the western coast of Scotland in 100 years. The course features six greens and five tees at ocean's edge. Kidd designed each hole around the natural terrain, and calls the undulating layout "a full-fledged mountaineering experience." New luxury golf cottages are available for rental adjacent to the course.

Nearby is the highly ranked Machrihanish Golf Club, laid out by Old Tom Morris in 1879. The highlight is a daunting opening par 4 that requires a tee shot over a stretch of the Atlantic.

Within a 35-mile radius of the village are world-renowned courses such as Turnberry, Prestwick and Royal Troon.
